Structured CABLING
Cabling is a much broader topic than it may sound like it is. Of course, it mostly runs cables between equipment, networks, etc., but multiple factors come into play. Oftentimes, the needs of the business determine what they are looking to do with their network and equipment setup. Besides running cables, cable management ensures that they all look neat and organized. Structured Cabling remains one of the most efficient methods of cabling.
What is It?
Basically, this type of cabling is an infrastructure in a campus, business, etc., that is made up of more minor elements that make the whole. The cabling, hardware, and equipment all connect to form a cohesive system. That system then forms combined hub of the various elements in a business, which offers more simplicity, convenience, and efficiency.
Many consider structured cabling the superior cabling method. For instance, many businesses and data centers use “point to point” cabling, which means that various equipment connect directly to one another using “jumper” cables. However, as the infrastructure grows, point-to-point cabling quickly shows its downsides. The more cables run between separate pieces of equipment, the bulkier it becomes. Lines running between equipment can block airflow, stress cables, and more.
How is Structured Cabling Done?
Structured cable systems consist of multiple trunks and patch panels. The hardware ports on the tops of racks connect through a box to the Main Distribution Area (MDA). The MDA operates as a central hub where all Moves, Adds, and Changes (MACs) communicate to the system. So, everything can be done from one easy spot instead of having to go around to various racks to handle any MACs. As a result, you now enjoy smooth, easy-to-manage, and cohesive tech network infrastructure.
The Benefits of Structured Cabling
First, ease of change offers an immense improvement over other cabling methods. Having all of your equipment in a singular spot makes handling adjustments and maintenance much easier. This improves efficiency, reduces the potential for problems, makes it easier to find any existing problems, and decreases downtime. This method also increases the lifespan of the equipment, as overfilled racks can cause airflow issues, and disorganized cable management can cause damage and issues. Finally, the user enjoys similar benefits as new software rolls out and evolves.
